Frequently Asked Questions
No, we teach people of all experience levels and abilities!
All Crabapple Martial Arts Staff goes through a background check to work here. On top of that our instructors are required to be Black Belts and spend countless hours learning the arts we teach and how to teach them. Our titled instructors have gone above and beyond this to learn even more depending on their rank and title.
Here at Crabapple Martial Arts Academy, we pride ourselves in making sure that students at all skill levels feel welcomed and supported. From seasoned students to brand new never before trained students. Therefore, when a new student begins a trial program with us, we first start them in a 1 on 1 lesson with a trained Black Belt instructor to help prepare a new student to attend class with the other students. In this 1 on 1 lesson, a new student is given skills and understanding so they do not feel overwhelmed when they begin training in the full basic class.
Yes! We emphasize safety in our practice and all instructors are trained to keep an eye on students to minimize risk of injury.
When you come into the dojo for a first free class you will meet with one of our Black Belt Instructors. They will do a one-on-one with you, learning what you are looking for in a program and then they can help you decide what of our programs would work best for you.
We teach a style of Karate and Jui Jitsu that has a focus on practical Self-Defense. On top of this we teach our students that the first response to any conflict should be a non-violent attempt at resolution.
Children have so many reasons for doing Martial Arts! Many parents are interested in the Character Development aspect of our program. We focus on helping students gain focus, self-confidence, discipline, and perseverance. Outside of the Character Development Program, martial arts is also a great tool to help kids stay active and work on fitness. It can be a productive outlet for energy. We have parents that love the social aspect of our classes and the bonds that our students have with the instructors and one another!
Self-Confidence is built by showing the kids what they are capable of accomplishing when they put their mind to it. We give them practice in real life situations and socialization with other children, showing them what they can accomplish with little wins helps them gain confidence in their own abilities!
We teach kids starting at age 4.
The first lesson we have with any new student is a one-on-one with a Black Belt Instructor! Our Instructors are always here for students and families if they need to talk about something.
Martial Arts naturally makes our students less likely to be bullied! When you build a child up to have more confidence and control over themselves and their body bullies become less likely to choose them as a target. We teach kids the best way to react if they are chosen by a bully and help them in deescalating situations as the first response.
This is something you do not have to worry about. Our students are trained first and foremost to respect EVERYONE, including other kids. We do not tolerate bullying from students. In addition to this we build in teaching students to protect themselves and others, supporting each other as a community. We do our best to lower the rates of bullying in the Alpharetta/Roswell area and this starts with our students.
We recommend all our students start out by coming twice a week to get into a routine with us. This helps us to maintain progress and grow our students!
There are countless reasons women join Crabapple Martial Arts Academy. Some join to achieve fitness goals, some for Self-Defense, some join in training with their kids as a family activity!
Martial Arts is great for fitness because our training helps work the whole body and mind. We keep students engaged and are here for long term success and goal achievement.
We have a diverse student and assistant instructor base. With this we also have many high ranking women who train and often help out with classes. We proudly offer free Women’s self-defense classes both for those who currently train and those who do not. We have a mission to help our community and continuously work to live up to this.
It is common for woman to be worried about joining in martial arts. Martial arts is typically seen as a ‘man’s’ activity and male dominated activities can be intimidating for many. At Crabapple Martial Arts Academy we are proud to say we have an incredibly diverse student population and a larger than average proportion of women.
We work to keep ALL of our members safe. Our students have training tailored to their needs and capabilities. We support all members of the community in their fitness and training goals no matter where they are when we first meet them. We have members of all experience levels and ages, including your age!
Above all we emphasize Respect. Martial arts, at its core, is the embodiment of respect. Self-respect and respect for others is a foundation for martial arts and an absolute requirement for our school. All students are taught to use proper etiquette and trained to use their art to bring out the best in themselves and others. The self-confidence and self-discipline that students develop naturally lead them to greater levels of respect for all. While martial arts teaches self-control a side effect of that often is less impulsivity towards violence. When you are confident in yourself and your abilities the insecurity and worries that can cause violence become less prevalent.
You do not need any special equipment to start at Crabapple Martial Arts Academy! As part of the cost of tuition we provide all necessary uniform parts and gear. This includes gear as you grow in our programs, whether it is a larger size for growing kids or protective equipment as you rank up with us!
Our classes are 45 minutes each.
We have many videos including ones of class on our YouTube channel!
Absolutely. We have a focus on helping students set and maintain realistic goals. Teaching how to set realistic goals and offer support is part of the culture of our dojo, we are here to help you and your family be successful and healthy.
Martial arts is a contact activity by nature. At the beginning of a student’s training they work with the instructors to understand drills. As they rank up and develop their control and understanding students will begin to run supervised drills with each other. For those that achieve blue belt and above they are invited to participate in sparring class where they will have lite supervised contact.
Our style of martial arts has a focus on teaching Practical Self-Defense, we want our students to be able to use what they have been taught and have it work in real world situations.
Our members have access to all classes for their belt level. All members over the age of 13 can join our Jui Jitsu classes and all Blue Belts and above are eligible to join in Sparring classes.
Classes at Crabapple Martial Arts Academy are made for the whole family, we even call our classes Family Style! We highly encourage families of all ages to train together!
Our Martial Arts training combined with a healthy lifestyle is the BEST way to achieve a calmer more centered state of mind.
With our society placing a high emphasis on staying in shape and achieving certain looks many people start out with running or weight lifting to stay in shape. The problem that many run into is keeping up the training due to boring routines. This is where martial arts has a leg up. With training you can shift the focus onto learning and keeping your mind engaged as well as your body. Martial arts offers excitement and a COMMUNITY to help you stay with your goals without feeling your experience stagnate.
The ability to take care of oneself in any potentially dangerous, or uncomfortable situation, is one reason many adult men join. Even though most of our adults seldom, if ever, get into a fighting situation. They often find themselves, in an uncomfortable situation, such as walking to their car late at night, or escorting someone in a less than secure neighborhood. It's at times like this that martial arts training greatly enhances your self-confidence because of the ability to really take care of yourself, or someone you care for, when the time arises. Many of the men in our program have dreamed about trying the martial arts since they were children but never had the time or money to make the commitment. The martial arts has always been known as one of the world's oldest and most recognized activities that everyone can do, no matter what age or physical ability. Family men will often join as a bonding experience with their children and fall in love with the activity themselves.
Tell that to Bruce Pfeiffer who became a 3rd degree black belt at the age of 74… or the grandmother who just at the World Championships for 4th degree black belt… There are more success stories than we can list here! The reason you can do martial arts at any age is that our instructors customize your training for you! We encourage you to take the plunge and try. You will see many people who surprise you with their passion and dedication to training despite their age.
We have lots of girls as students here! It is rare to have a class without more than one girl on the mat!
Students who want to excel in martial arts must make a commitment to continued study. We can’t guarantee that your child will stick to it, but we can tell you that our instructors encourage persistence and teach kids that they can’t achieve their goals if they give up.
They might – but martial arts classes are fun and social, and kids also see them as cool. We’re used to a little resistance, but we also know how to get kids interested in what we teach and keep them interested.
Martial arts training teaches focus, discipline, self-control, and respect. These traits help children let go of petty grievances and learn to pay attention to the things that are most important to their future success.
