Honoring a Milestone
Shihan: A New Title
Crabapple Martial Arts Academy is thrilled to share a momentous achievement in our dojo’s history. Last weekend at the 7th Annual Warrior Leadership Summit, Matthew White, our founder and leader, was awarded the prestigious title of Shihan. This honor represents years of dedication, mastery, and service to the martial arts community.
Shihan Meaning
The title of Shihan, which translates to “Master Teacher” or “Teacher of Teachers,” is a significant recognition in the world of martial arts. It is not awarded lightly but is given to those who have demonstrated exceptionalism. Between skill level, a deep understanding of the art, and an unwavering commitment to students and community Matthew White demonstrates this continuously.
Shi- translates to “example”, “model” or “warrior”
-han translates to “master” or “exemplary practitioner”
It is important to understand that the meaning of Master is someone who has mastered basic and advanced understandings of our style. Thus, the title Shihan means someone who has mastered basic and advanced techniques, principles, concepts, and theory. The title Shihan does not mean that this person has stopped learning because they know all of the answers. On the contrary, they are considered to be the most serious and dedicated students in any style of martial arts.
This title is most often awarded to those who have reached Shichidan, or 7th-degree black belt. However, it can be awarded to some as early as Rokudan, 6th degree black belt, such as in this case for Matthew White, who currently holds the rank of Rokudan (6th degree black belt) in Shintoyoshinkai Jiu Jitsu, and a Godan (5th degree black belt) in Shuri Ryu Karatedo.
Shihan Matt
For Shihan Matt, this title acknowledges decades of training, teaching, and leadership that have impacted countless students.
Holding a Rokudan in Shintoyoshin Kai Jui Jitsu, Shihan Matt’s journey in martial arts spans decades. His training has taken him across the country and beyond, as he has not only honed his own skills but also dedicated his life to sharing the principles of martial arts with others. From building confidence in young students to mentoring future black belts, his influence reaches far beyond the dojo.
Receiving the title of Shihan is not only a recognition of expertise but also of character. It reflects a martial artist who leads with integrity, humility, and a passion for teaching. For Shihan Matt, this honor is a milestone on his relentless journey pursuing excellence.
At Crabapple Martial Arts Academy, we are incredibly proud of his achievement and what it represents for our community. Under Shihan Matt’s leadership, our students continue to learn not only the techniques of martial arts but also the values of discipline, perseverance, and respect. His new title serves as an inspiration to all of us, reminding us of what is possible through dedication and hard work.
As we celebrate this accomplishment, we look forward to continuing the journey with Shihan Matt leading the way. The path of martial arts is one of constant learning and growth, and we are grateful to have a leader who embodies these principles so fully. Congratulations to Shihan Matt on this well-deserved honor!
Let’s keep moving forward together, striving for excellence and embracing the lifelong journey of martial arts.
